How to Start a Movement of Prayer

Have you ever changed your mind about something? Maybe a wise professor encouraged you to change majors halfway through college. Maybe you were annoyed by a coworker, but after a meaningful conversation, she became your closest friend in the office.

We all know what it’s like to have someone open our eyes to a new perspective or an unexpected path.

But did you know your prayers have that same kind of influence and can even impact how God moves? Take it from Exodus 32, when God decided how He would respond to a difficult situation. Moses prayed, and God decided to respond differently.

Wait—What happened??

In Exodus 32, God rescued the Israelites from captivity in Egypt and had them temporarily live in the wilderness. One day, while Moses went up to the mountain to talk to God, the Israelites got impatient. They said to themselves, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him” (Exodus 32:1). So, they melted down their golden jewelry to make an idol—a golden calf that they worshipped instead of the Living God who saved them.

When God saw what happened, He was over it. He told Moses, “Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them,” (Exodus 32:10).

Then something interesting happened: Moses prayed. Verse 11 says, “But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. ‘Lord,’ he said, ‘why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?’” He went on to remind God of the promises He made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob!

And guess what? Verse 14 says, “Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.”

That’s a cool story. But what does it mean for my life?

Moses was an ordinary person just like you—a normal Christian who decided to pray bold and believing prayers to a God he trusted to come through on His word. And when Moses prayed, God listened. The same is true of you!

When you pray, mountains are moved. When you pray, souls are saved. When you pray, God’s heart bends to hear from you. Your prayers have the power to change things—including in India.

At Mission India, we believe prayer is the first work of missions. Your prayers go where the Gospel has not yet been! By joining with others to pray for India, you have the power to bring the Gospel to the most unreached nation on earth. Now that’s power!
